The combination may sound slightly crazy—raisins, feta, chicken, bacon and poppy-seed dressing—but that sweet-salty-crunchy mixture is exactly what makes it Grumpy’s. The restaurant’s current menu confirms all the principal ingredients, while the 13ABC kitchen demonstration supplies most of the measurements.

Ingredients

4 cups mixed greens or chopped romaine

2 tablespoons diced red onion

¼ cup diced tomato

¼ cup thinly sliced mushrooms

1 tablespoon raisins

¼ cup crumbled feta

½ cup shredded mozzarella and provolone blend

½ cup chopped grilled chicken

1 generous tablespoon real bacon bits

½ cup croutons

½ cup broken pita chips

About ⅓ cup Grumpy’s poppy-seed dressing (Sautter's sells the dressing in Sylvania)

Directions

  1. Place the greens, onion, tomato, mushrooms and raisins in a large bowl.

  2. Add the feta, mozzarella-provolone blend, chicken and bacon.

  3. Pour in enough poppy-seed dressing to coat everything well and toss thoroughly.

  4. Add the croutons and pita chips last so they remain crunchy.

If you are game and want to try to make your own dressing, have at it!

  • ⅓ cup sugar

  • ½ cup white vinegar

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard

  • 1 teaspoon finely grated onion

  • 1 cup neutral oil, such as canola

  • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds

Whisk the sugar, vinegar, salt, mustard and onion together. Slowly whisk in the oil until emulsified, then stir in the poppy seeds. Refrigerate for at least an hour and shake well before using.
